Congratulations to Pat Kilpatrick, who prepared and nurtured our Preston Garden Club hanging basket, which was entered in the ‘Great Hanging Basket Competition’. Although we did not win a prize, our basket certainly drew some favourable comments from the public the day that I visited the display. The delicate blend of pastel colours ranging from the silver of the cineraria senecio (dusty miller) to the pale pinks of the bedding begonia under-planted with blue lobelia was a hit with the older ladies.

JOHN ALAN BECKETT
25TH July 1920 – 5th April 2009
It is with sincere sadness that we note the passing of our dear friend, member, past vice president, committee member, John Beckett on 5th April. John had been a member of our club in excess of forty years. He was a cornerstone of our club and was involved with every aspect of running Preston Garden Club over the years. John was a link between the traditions and characters of the Preston Garden Club of the past and the members of the present. He was devoted to the club and its members, and highly respected, and a friend to all who knew him. John will be surely missed.

Northcote Garden Club:
A Proud History of 103 Years
1906 – Northcote Horticultural Society held its 1st Grand Floral carnival on Wednesday 14th
November, at the Northcote Town Hall, followed by a social evening.
A proud history of 103 years.
Preston Garden Club:
75 Years and Growing
1934 - The urban sprawl crept north, and on 27th August 1934 at a public meeting, held in Preston Town Hall, a motion was passed to form a Horticultural Society in Preston. We will celebrate our 75th anniversary at our August meeting.
Together, our clubs have served the horticultural interests of our community for 178 years.
Time For Change
Due to changing population, new technology, economics, the vast range of recreational opportunities now offered to our community, and the ageing membership of our clubs, it is growing more and more difficult to offer members the variety of events that we have become accustomed to. As a result of this, the membership of Northcote Garden club has voted to no longer operate as a separate identity as from their June meeting, this must have been a hard and sad decision to take. However, many have chosen to transfer their membership to Preston Garden Club.
Welcome:
We welcome these members with open arms; after all, most of us are good friends already, with the same gardening interests. The devotion to gardening, the enthusiasm, the new and tried ideas they bring can only benefit us all in achieving our goals.
These are now paid up members of Preston Garden Club and able to vote, and to stand for election to our committee at our A.G.M. in July, as are any of our new members, and I encourage them to do so.
Welcome,
Cheers, Bill.
